Time for actions, not words, to help single parents

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today that MPs need to take action in Parliament in order to match their public  statements of support for single parents and people on Newstart.

“MPs are making a habit of speaking about the need to help single parents, without taking action in Parliament,” Senator Siewert said today.

“What is the point of public platitudes if MPs then walk into the Parliament and then vote in an entirely different manner?

Greens introduce Bill to raise Newstart and Youth Allowance by $50 per week

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Families and Community Services has introduced a Private Members Bill to Parliament which increases Newstart and Youth Allowance by $50 per week.

“In a world that is getting harsher, it is government’s role to make things easier for all Australians. Punishing job seekers by condemning them to poverty is not contributing to the caring society that the majority of people want for themselves and their children,” Senator Siewert said today.

Federal Greens join protest against parenting payment cuts

 

Greens MPs have spoken at a Parliament House rally in Canberra today, taking a stand against cuts to parenting payments that have forced single parents to move to the inadequate Newstart Allowance and lose between $60 and $100 per week.

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert, spokesperson for Families and Community Services and Deputy Leader Adam Bandt said today that the Government was failing in its primary responsibility of caring for vulnerable people.

Greens urge Minister Macklin to live on Newstart

Responding to Minister Macklin's comments in Melbourne on New Year's Day, Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for Family and Community Services said, "If Minister Macklin really believes that she could live on Newstart for an extended period of time, she has demonstrated how little she understands of life below the poverty line.

"Minister Macklin obviously has little understanding of the cost of living and the problems of trying to make ends meet when living on income support. If she did she wouldn't be making claims that she could live on it.

Parenting payment cuts start to hurt single parents

The Australian Greens have called on Federal MPs who supported parenting payment cuts to visit community relief centres over the coming weeks to understand the financial pressures being faced by families affected by the cuts.

"From today, up to 84,000 single parents will begin to move from parenting payment to Newstart Allowance, a reduction of household income of between $60 to $100 per week," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on families and community services said today.

Greens send a Christmas Card to Minister Shorten

The Australian Greens have today launched a ‘All I want for Christmas is a $50 increase in Newstart' Christmas card campaign supporting a $50 per week increase to the inadequate payment.

"Yesterday, the Senate Inquiry into Newstart tabled a report that clearly demonstrates the inadequacy of the Newstart payment," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

"We are encouraging people to sign one of our cards and send them to Minister Shorten - calling on him and the Government to make a commitment to increasing Newstart.

Senate Committee finds Newstart inadequate

The Australian Greens have called on the Government to increase the Newstart Allowance after a Senate Committee today found the payment is inadequate.

The Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations References Committee has today handed down a report into the adequacy of Newstart and other allowance payments.
