Special disability trusts

Senator SIEWERT (Western Australia)(11.04 am)—This is an issue that I have been passionate about for some time. In fact I initiated the Senate inquiry into special disability trusts that I think has led—along with the very strong community campaign—to the government putting forward the Tax Laws Amendment (2010 Measures No. 3) Bill 2010. On the whole we support this legislation. We are pleased that the government has taken up the recommendations and I encourage them to look again at some of the recommendations they have not taken up—and they know very well that I was going to say that!

Forced Adoption

Senator SIEWERT (Western Australia) (3.59 pm)—I move: That the Senate—

(a) recognises the grief, pain and anguish suffered by thousands of mothers who were vic-tims of the forced adoption policies implemented by state governments for decades; and

(b) acknowledges:
(i)     this pain and grief is on-going, and
(ii)    these mothers deserve an apology for the pain and anguish they have suffered and continue to suffer.

Disability carers need urgent financial support increase

Carers of disabled people need immediate financial relief while system-wide funding reform occurs, said Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert today.

"The Federal Government is currently conducting a feasibility study into a national disability insurance scheme, but this does not address the immediate and urgent needs of carers now," said Senator Siewert.

"Funding problems for the disability sector won't be addressed over night and long-term systemic change is required.

Greens rally in support of midwives

The Australian Greens have put their support behind rallies being held around Australia today in support of the rights of Australian midwives.

The Greens support the rights of women to choose safe homebirths with the assistance of a midwife and have been working to strengthen the government's midwives legislation.

But the government's amendment to their bill, to be debated next week, requires midwives to work at all times in formal collaborative arrangements with doctors as a condition of insurance.
