Small steps on suicide welcomed, much more still outstanding- Greens

The Australian Greens say the Government’s response to the Senate Community Affairs Inquiry on Suicide and Suicide Prevention chaired by Senator Rachel Siewert is to be welcomed, but note there are many more recommendations in the Senate Standing Committee’s report which have not been supported.

“The Hidden Toll report found significant investment in suicide prevention and mental heal services was needed, and it’s disappointing that many of these recommendations aren’t being addressed,” Senator Rachel Siewert, said today.

Greens back major church groups call to action on mental health

The Australian Greens today welcomed a call by the major church providers of social services to political parties to commit to immediate action on mental health.

"Funding for community mental health services is a priority for The Greens," said Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens Health spokesperson today.

"The Greens have previously called on the Government to act on the mental health recommendations of the NHHRC report," Senator Siewert said.

Australian Greens call for appointment of Federal Mental Health Minister

The Australian Greens have congratulated the Coalition for putting mental health back on the national agenda and are calling for their $1.5 billion policy announcement to be implemented through the appointment of a dedicated Mental Health Minister.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens spokesperson for Mental Health, says the Greens would work with an Abbott Government to implement their mental health policy if elected, and would extend the same offer to the ALP.

Greens push for ongoing health reform negotiations

The Australian Greens are urging the Government to continue negotiations which would expand the $7.3 billion health reform package by including overhauls to aged care, dental and mental health services.

"The Greens will continue to promote sensible and constructive action, expanding the Government's plan to see long awaited reforms for the aged care sector, action on mental health and the implementation of a national dental health care system," Australian Greens Health Spokesperson Rachel Siewert said today.

A new approach for mental health - Greens

The Greens today announced a comprehensive mental health plan for Australia and are calling on the Commonwealth to embrace it as a fundamental part of the Prime Minister's proposed health reform program.

"The Greens have a fully developed, integrated plan for mental health which I urge Mr Rudd to consider if he is serious about building a reformed and effective health system", said Greens health spokesperson, Senator Rachel Siewert.
