ALP, Coalition refuse to condemn Japanese dolphin hunt

The ALP and Coalition have combined to block an Australian Greens motion condemning the slaughter of dolphins and porpoises by Japan.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said the annual Japanese dolphin and porpoise hunt is a deliberate attempt to overcome bans on the commercial killing of whales.

“This yearly kill is a disturbing display of regulated coastal whaling,” Senator Siewert said today.

Green amendments strengthen national regulator

The Australian Greens have improved the operations of the new national regulator for the offshore oil and gas sector, but say the Government and Coalition have failed to adequately learn from the lessons of the Montara Oil Spill.

The Greens support the establishment of NOPSEMA (the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority) as a national regulator with responsibility for oil well integrity, environmental management and occupation health and safety matters.

Greens question Government over North West bottom trawling

The Australian Greens will continue efforts to protect sustainable fishing industries in WA’s North West from destructive bottom trawling after the Senate failed to support a Greens motion to protect sensitive areas in the NW Trawl fishery.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine and fisheries spokesperson has questioned Fisheries Minister Joe Ludwig over an administrative error made in 1998, which allows trawling to occur within previously protected areas of the North West of WA.
