Greens Northern conservation plan to tackle mammal extinctions

The Australian Greens today have launched a comprehensive plan to tackle the wave of mammalian extinctions sweeping across Northern Australia.

"Over the last two decades there has been a dramatic decrease in the diversity and abundance of small mammals across Northern Australia. Serious action is needed now to halt this devastation," said Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens resource management spokesperson today.

"Reports have recently indicated an 82% decline in mammal numbers and a 70% decline in species across Northern Australia.

Indonesian claims for Montara compensation no surprise: Greens

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert says the news today that the Indonesian Government will seek compensation as a result of the Montara Oil spill comes as no surprise, and puts even more pressure on the Australian government to take decisive action in the wake of the disaster.

"We have been expecting a compensation claim by Indonesia over the Montara spill since Indonesian fishing communities were affected by the spill spreading through the waters they fish in," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

Oil spill report languishes in 'too-hard basket' - Greens

"The Gillard Government has had enough time to consider and get advice on the findings of the Commission of Inquiry into the Montara oil spill," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.

"Has the issue of regulatory reform of offshore oil and gas industries been put in Minister Martin Ferguson's 'too-hard basket' to be buried until after the election?"

"The Prime Minister needs to step in here, release the report and outline the Government's reform agenda".

Dieback Needs Action

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert will be speaking at Friday's Dieback conference ‘Protecting Your Patch' on putting the issue of dieback back on the political agenda.

"This disease is one of the biggest single threats to biodiversity in the south-west of WA where it has already severely impacted on one million hectares and threatens another million hectares," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

Greens plan to prevent catastrophic oil spills

The Australian Greens will push for tough new regulations for the oil and gas industry, including a comprehensive polluter pays regime, to reduce the risk of catastrophic oil spills off Australian coastlines.

Announcing a new protection plan with Senator for Western Australia Rachel Siewert in Perth today, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said the nation’s coastlines, unique species and marine industries are exposed by the current weak regulations.
