Climate package biodiversity and NRM investment a big win for WA

The Australian Greens say funding from the carbon price package will be used to boost natural resource management programs across Western Australia.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on natural resource management said today that protecting and valuing the land and our biodiversity is an important part of tackling climate change.

“The package provides $1.7 billion of independently managed funding which will be used to protect biodiversity and assist natural resource management,” Senator Siewert said today.

Shell, PTTEP applications should be full assessed - Greens

The Australian Greens have questioned the Federal Environment Department's decision to allow Shell to drill near the newly-declared Ningaloo World Heritage area without a full environmental assessment.

"This deep water drilling will be at a depth of about 1350 metres, in an area of great environmental significance. This is nearly as deep as the Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico that went so tragically wrong," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today.

For a start, regarding this issue about private members' time, we did debate a bill this morning and we got a whole bill through. The Independents were always due to have a slot during this sitting. In fact, as I recollect, it was the previous week that they were due to have a slot on a program—the whole slot. Senator Xenophon was very generous in giving up some of the time for this morning's debate to start the debate on this particular bill.

Single oil and gas regulator an ‘important step’ – Greens

Australian Greens marine spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert says legislation to establish a national regulator for the offshore petroleum industry is an important step towards improving regulation of the oil and gas sector.

Key areas missing from South West Marine Plan – Greens

Today’s announcement has fallen well short of the comprehensive network of marine sanctuaries promised for Australia’s South West marine region by Federal Environment Minister Burke, according to Greens marine spokesperson, Senator Rachel Siewert.

“Some key areas are missing from the plan,” Senator Siewert said today.

“Our South West marine region includes some of the greatest marine diversity on the planet and provides a habitat for many rare and endangered species. It provides a home to more unique marine life than the Great Barrier Reef.

Greens vow to fight Ningaloo drilling

The Australian Greens have condemned plans to explore for oil and gas at a depth of over 5km just 50km off WA's world-famous Ningaloo reef and are calling on the Federal Government to reject the proposal.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens Marine spokesperson says that despite the huge Montara and the Gulf of Mexico oil spills, oil and gas regulations in Australia remain unchanged as the Government continues to grant licences for drilling in important environmental areas.
