Greens double firefighters to deal with extreme bushfires in a warming world

The Australian Greens today announced a $370 million plan to adapt to global warming which includes a commitment to doubling the number of paid firefighters by 2030.  

Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, Senator Larissa Waters, said:

“We are the driest inhabited continent on earth and most Australians live near the coast, so the extreme weather caused by global warming, including more frequent catastrophic bushfires and sea-level rise, threatens our very way of life.

WA would lose $800m investment if the RET was scrapped

The Western Australia renewable energy sector would cop an $800 million cut in investment if the Abbott Government scraps the successful Renewable Energy Target.

By accepting the recommendations of the Warburton Review, the disastrous move could see up to $10.7 billion of renewable energy investment driven into overseas markets and threaten 21,000 direct employees nationally.

Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam said WA had the one of the highest rates of solar uptake in the country with 156,544 houses now sourcing their energy from solar - 16 per cent of households.

Retrograde position on climate change threatens WA’s oceans

The Australian Greens said today that the Government's backwards step on climate change poses a serious threat to WA's oceans.

"Tony Abbott's Government has introduced a Bill to repeal the carbon price legislation," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine and fisheries spokesperson said today.

"The Coalition are ignoring the fact that climate change is having an increasing impact on our lives and our environment, including our oceans, putting the future of our marine environment, tourism, commercial fishing, and recreation-based industries at risk.

Abbott's northern push shows little understanding of responsible development

The Australian Greens said today that Tony Abbott's plan for Australia's north shows how little he understands about the importance of responsible, sustainable development.

"Northern Australia is not an empty and forgotten part of our country waiting to be exploited, which is what Mr Abbott seems to think," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens agriculture spokesperson said today.
