A collaboration between Tangentyere Research and filmmaker Vincent Lamberti, Intervention looks at the impacts of the Federal Government's Northern Territory Emergency Response into Aboriginal Communities, otherwise known as the 'Intervention', from the perspective of the people who live under the legislation day in day out. It was the Winner of the Documentary Australia Award 2008 for Best Documentary raising awareness around an important social issue.

Questioning by the Australian Greens during Senate Estimates has revealed that three areas within a national heritage zone on WA’s Burrup Peninsular have been affected by blasting and bulldozing.

Greens Senator for WA Rachel Siewert said concerns about damage to the area had first been raised with Federal Heritage Minister Peter Garrett last year.

“The answers given to me by officials from his department yesterday have revealed the damage is extensive and not just in one area,” Senator Siewert said.

Greens Senator for WA Rachel Siewert has urged the Minister for Heritage, Peter Garrett to take seriously potential damage to a national heritage-listed site on Western Australia's Burrup Peninsular.

"We hear that the Heritage Minister's Department has gone to the trouble of seeking expert archaeological and legal advice about whether multinational Cemex has damaged artefacts of national heritage significance on the Burrup," Senator Siewert said.

"We now need to know the outcome of this advice and what Minister Garrett plans to do about it.

More money, not less, would be available for country sport under an alcohol sponsorship substitution scheme proposed by the Australian Greens.

“The Greens fully support the role of sports and cultural events in Australia, especially in regional areas,” said Greens Health Spokesperson Rachel Siewert.

“However, we are deeply concerned about the problem of harmful drinking, which is costing our community $15.4 billion-a-year and is a concern across all age groups, particularly the young.

The Australian Greens have criticised the Western Australian Government for dismissing the need to protect the world's largest collection of Aboriginal rock engravings on the Burrup Peninsular in the State's north-west.

"In opposition, Colin Barnett called for the relocation of future Dampier industrial development away from the Burrup rock art and rightly described the art as having world heritage value," said Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert.

The Government is actively facilitating the destruction of the Burrup's unique rock art with today's approval to Woodside's Pluto gas development.

"This is the third major environmental decision by the Howard Government in the past few days, first with the Gunns Pulp Mill, then Barrow Island. Now they seem determined to steamroll over the Burrup peninsula," said Australian Greens spokesperson for the Environment Rachel Siewert.

Senator Rachel Siewert, today called on the Government to ensure that the priceless cultural heritage of the Burrup peninsula was protected.

"We understand the WA EPA has given the go ahead for preparatory work on the Pluto Area B site on the Burrup, and that this work could start at anytime. We are very concerned that this may affect the cultural values of the area" said Senator Siewert.

The decision by the Minister for the Environment to give National Heritage listing to the rock art of the Burrup Peninsula and Dampier Archipelago is overdue, insufficient, and lacks courage.
