I am deeply disappointed that the Senate has today voted down the Greens disallowance motion that would have stopped the Cashless Welfare Card in the Goldfields, Ceduna and East Kimberley in its tracks. It is also ridiculous that the ALP tries to run the argument that they want to stop the Goldfields trial but not the ones in the East Kimberley and Ceduna. People in the East Kimberley and Ceduna are being subjected to the same punitive and humiliating measures.
I am really worried that people on income support with mental health issues, cognitive impairment or who are homeless are among those being deliberately targeted by this Government for debt collection. This is an appalling way to treat Australians and the Government can’t just suspend the program they must cease it immediately.
