"I think it's an important message and speaks volumes that someone like John Howard, who is traditionally a Liberal conservative, has said that he wants to support the increase to Newstart”
When parliament returns we’ll be moving to increase Newstart urgently by $75 a week. Contact your local Labor or Liberal member and ask if they’ll support this measure.
The Government has extended the current cashless welfare trials sites and established a new site, and have plans for a fourth when they are unable to show the card has had a positive outcome.
When the Government first announced these ‘trials’ I continually pointed out that the baseline data was not being collected, nor was there a comparable site without the card, to actually gather evidence about the cards effectiveness.
Now the Auditor General has unsurprisingly reported that the evidence base behind performance reports to the Minister has been lacking. Communities have been through enough of this social experiment which the Government cannot claim is working.
It is not shocking to read that ORIMA did not use all the relevant data to measure the impact of the trial. I pointed out clearly at the time that the evaluation was flawed and missing basic information such as police statistics from the trial areas.
This measure must be abandoned.
