Greens WA Senators Rachel Siewert and Scott Ludlam were among thousands of concerned citizens who called on the Federal Government to take meaningful action on climate change in Canberra today.
Senator Siewert said she was thrilled by the West Australian turnout at the Canberra rally.
“The fact that people travelled across the Nullarbor to be here showed this is truly a national emergency,” she said.
Senator Ludlam said it was a great start to the first sitting of Parliament this year.
“It was really wonderful to be there. The big WA contingent really did us proud,” he said.
A wall of people encircled Parliament House this morning, calling for action following a three-day Climate Action Summit.
All five Federal Greens senators were part of the protest. Many WA groups were also represented at a three-day climate conference that preceded this morning’s rally.
In the afternoon, the Greens presented a petition to the Federal Government containing 4,600 signatures calling for it to lift its carbon reduction target from the current five per cent to between 25 and 40 per cent.
