Time for joint venture partners to look elsewhere

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 8 Dec 2011

The joint venture partners of the proposed gas hub at James Price Point must be growing increasingly frustrated with the project, the Australian Greens said today.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on the Kimberley says that the joint venture partners should be looking for alternative development locations.

“It is clear that other locations offer a better alternative than James Price Point,” Senator Siewert said today.

“A new site should be chosen so that development does not compromise culture, heritage or the environment.

“Each step of this project has been a struggle, because of the complex issues involved and the growing community understanding that we need to protect precious areas from exploitation.

“The Pilbara, with its existing infrastructure, is a far stronger location for this project than James Price Point.

“The Kimberley is being pushed forward for the LNG hub because this would wedge the door open for future industrialisation.

“The joint venture partners must have reached the point of realisation that there are more suitable locations exist for this development,” Senator Siewert concluded.
