The Australian Greens said today that Tony Abbott and Greg Hunt should take note of the large number of public submissions made to the EPA over the need to refer the extension of the drum line program for environmental assessment.
"This cull is deeply unpopular in WA, people know it is damaging to the environment and people are concerned about the prospect of it continuing for another three years," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today.
"The Federal Environment Minister has an obligation to ensure that an environmental assessment of the highest standards is undertaken into the WA Government's plans, alongside the WA EPA assessment.
"To date, the Federal Government has done little other than rubber-stamp this cull. They have failed to hold Colin Barnett to account for the policy's failure and the significant number of sharks that have been killed or injured.
"The Government must live up to its responsibilities to protect Australia's unique and vulnerable marine life," Senator Siewert concluded.
