Senate does not support Greens motion calling for disabled people to receive increase in support

For the second day in a row the Senate has not supported disabled people and carers, voting down a Greens motion calling for a top-up payment to Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment so that these payments are equal to the new rate of Jobseeker Payment, ” Senator Rachel Siewert said.

"I’m really disappointed that my colleagues are not seeing how big an issue this is for disabled people and carers.

"Disabled people and carers are our community, they are our constituents and they are facing extra costs due to this pandemic and they have a right to be supported during this crisis."

The motion reads:
I give notice that on the next day of sitting we shall move –
That the Senate:
a) Notes that Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment recipients did not receive the coronavirus supplement;
b) Acknowledges that people receiving the Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment receive up to $255.10 a fortnight less than someone on Jobseeker Payment with the coronavirus supplement;
c) Acknowledges that people on the Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment are also facing additional costs due to coronavirus that are not adequately met by the $750 economic stimulus payments;
d) Calls on the Government to provide a top-up payment to Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment recipients so that these payments are equal to the new rate of Jobseeker Payment.
