Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert has said that WA Premier Colin Barnett should stop playing state rights politics with the NDIS.
"WA is now the only state or territory not involved in the NDIS, and as a West Australian, I'm ashamed by that," Senator Siewert said today.
"I will be the first to say that WA has done better with services for people with disability than other states have done in the past, but this is no reason not to join this transformative, national approach.
"There is huge level of unmet need for those people living with a disability in WA. The Premier needs to negotiate a good outcome and get over his fixation with this WA v Commonwealth battle.
"People already receiving support in WA will not go backwards under the NDIS. The scheme has provisions to maintain current levels of support but also allows people to choose different support, according to their needs.
"WA needs to come on board to ensure people have access to the same systems and supports as the rest of the nation.
"The Senate Inquiry into this legislation consistently heard that people with disability wanted the NDIS to go ahead as soon as possible.
"Colin Barnett needs to listen to the community and make sure these reforms are delivered," Senator Siewert concluded.
