Using the "improved budget position" to give tax cuts to the wealthy is yet another vote buying exercise and election pitch for an increasingly desperate Government.
"Once again the Coalition's agenda is crystal clear, shoring up support for the next election rather than doing their job to ensure that no one in our wealthy country is living in poverty, Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services Senator Rachel Siewert said.
“The Government should be investing in our social security system and increasing Newstart and Youth Allowance.
"If Mr Morrison doesn't want to raise Newstart, because it's the right thing to do, perhaps he could do it for the economy he is so concerned about - just last week Deloitte Access economics released research showing that an increase to Newstart by $75 a week would have boost the Australian economy by $4.0 billion as a result of extra spending.
"I look forward to debating the Greens bill in October that would increase Newstart and Youth Allowance by $75 a week and hearing why this Government thinks that tax cuts for the wealthy are affordable but helping people out of poverty isn't."
