Morrison back to his old myths and tropes surrounding Jobseeker

"The PM'S claims that the Jobseeker rate is discouraging people from working is a regression to old myths and tropes used to demonise people who are accessing income support." Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services said today.

"The Government is trying to restart their campaign against people who need to access income support."

"People looking for work are having to pay mortgages and rent and meet essential costs like food and utilities. Dropping the rate of Jobseeker below the poverty line will result in people defaulting on their mortgages, renters will be in even more housing stress and homelessness rates will increase."

"The higher level of Jobseeker has enabled many people to get out of poverty or stay above the poverty line, which is a key barrier to finding and maintaining employment."

"We are a caring nation and we know that there are more people unemployed than there are jobs and those people need support not demonising."

"The Government should be looking toward reforming the broken Jobactive system to better support jobseekers to re-enter the workforce rather than scapegoating income support recipients."
