The Australian Greens are calling on the major parties to lift their game when it comes to increasing Newstart and addressing poverty in Australia.
"It is despicable that both major parties are prepared to leave people living in poverty, while they either tell us about a “review” or make up nonsense about so –called supplementary payments, Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community services said today.
"The argument over extra or supplementary payments is nonsense, many people don’t even get these payments and they are a minimal supplement that amount to around an extra dollar a day.
"ACOSS has repeatedly exposed these claims for the myths they are.
"While the major parties keep trying to outdo themselves over who can create a surplus, millions of people go without food, medical assistance or a roof over their head.
"What sort of country do we live in when our key political goal is a budget surplus rather than lifting our community, including children out of poverty.
"This should be treated as the crisis it is, instead we have both parties in a race to the bottom to see who can give the biggest tax cuts to people on already high incomes and deny people on the lowest incomes fundamental human dignity."
