High Court decision has far reaching consequences

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 14 Nov 2006

The High Court decision on the constitutional validity of the Government's Work Choices legislation is a landmark declaration which may permanently change the way Australia is governed, according to the Greens.

"Just because these laws are constitutional doesn't make them fair on workers," Senator Siewert said.

"Yesterday it was revealed that the Government has sharpened these laws even further in favour of employers, with new amendments on sick leave, record keeping and stand-down provisions. On top of that, today's decision means a double whammy for workers. With this legal avenue closed, the issue of fair workplace laws will now have to be resolved at the ballot box."

"The Greens are committed to the repeal of Work Choices in its entirety."
