Greens write to Minister Ruston asking her to use legislative instrument to increase support for people on DSP and Carers payment

"I have written to Minister Ruston asking her to immediately increase the Disability Support Pension and Carers payment using the power under amendments in the Coronavirus Economic Response Package Omnibus Act 2020 to change social security settings via legislative instruments to provide additional support when needed.

"It is crystal clear if you speak to anyone on these payments that additional support is urgently needed for Disability Support Pensioners through this crisis.

"Disabled people report going without food and medicine due to the additional costs associated with this crisis including food delivery, health care, medical supplies, personal protective equipment, transport, and utility bills.

"Costs and barriers have increased, not decreased, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Many services disabled people rely on are being closed or withdrawn and the options to replace these services are extremely expensive.

'I am calling on the Minister to treat disabled people and carers in the same way they have treated the rest of the community and increase the DSP and Carer Payment.

'This week I co-hosted an online forum with my colleague Senator Jordon Steele-John with over 500  people participating live. We heard from community members who are struggling with the additional costs of the pandemic. I don't know how anyone could hear these experiences and not be moved.

'No one should be worrying about where their next meal is coming from or skipping medication in a country as wealthy as Australia.

'This is a community campaign and at the moment, disabled people and their carers feel abandoned by this Government."
