The Greens said today ahead of the debate on their bill to increase Newstart and Youth Allowance by $75 a week on Monday, that this is part of their on-going campaign to increase Newstart.
“We are campaigning for an increase to Newstart, as is the community sector and many in the business sector.
“Votes in Parliament send a message and every single vote is a show of solidarity and adds to the pressure to increase Newstart. Politicians can’t forget that.
“Every single parliamentary vote is part of the campaign to increase Newstart.
“The Greens have and will continue to work alongside unemployed workers and the community every step of the way.
“Those in Parliament who support an increase to Newstart should vote for their professed values.
“Private Members Bills can be powerful. The Marriage Equality Bill was a Private Members Bill. In 2012 I introduced and the Parliament passed a bill that helped address petrol sniffing.
"When the people in Parliament work for their community, we can do powerful things, together.
“The Greens went to the election with a fully costed policy platform including an increase to Newstart.”
