Greens will refer NT plan to Senate committee

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 6 Aug 2007

The Australian Greens will be referring the NT intervention Bills for Senate committee inquiry.

"The Australian Greens are not convinced -- and more importantly neither is the community -- that the Bills to be introduced to Parliament this week will deliver what is actually required to effectively tackle child abuse in the Northern Territory," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.

"The Government has botched this issue from the start, announcing a flawed plan that they have had to back down on. We are extremely concerned about the Bills about to be introduced and believe they need a thorough inquiry by the Senate," she said.

"500 pages of complex legislation needs careful analysis and review. How can good governance possibly be carried out by ramming these amendments through in a week?"

"The Government is already signalling it doesn't want the Bills to go before a Senate inquiry - what have they got to hide? There is no justification for rushing this legislation through Parliament," she said.

"Once again this tired Government is treating the Parliament with contempt and playing politics with peoples' lives. Rushing through other pieces of flawed legislation has come back to haunt the Government, so will this," concluded Senator Siewert.
