Greens welcome reported changes to robodebt

The Australian Greens are pleased that the Government appears to have finally realised how fundamentally flawed the robodebt system is.

It is being reported that the Government is making long overdue changes to the robodebt program and hope that this will be the start of a more robust and transparent approach to the way that the Government treats people on income support.
“It’s about time that the Government recognised how damaging this program is, that income averaging and reversing the onus of proof is wrong and totally unfair”, Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services said.
“This program has hurt thousands and thousands of people, the averaging of income and reversing the onus of proof should have been addressed long ago and the Government should apologise to all the people they have caused such distress to.
“We need more information about what this will mean for those who already have debts raised or who have already paid them or are on a payment plan.

“I call on the Minister to be transparent about these changes.
“One wonders if the Government is anticipating the outcome of cases currently before the court.”
