The Greens said today that instead of the Nationals proposing to “top up wages in the bush” they should be joining the campaign to increase Newstart.
“It’s pretty bleeding obvious that we need to increase Newstart, and this proposal to “top up wages” is yet another case of the Coalition’s ideological opposition to increasing Newstart.
“Newstart hasn’t had increase in over 25 years so of course people in the regions are struggling to get by with added pressures like drought and natural disasters.
“Our social safety net is there for these type of situations but it needs to be adequate.
“There is a reason we have a social safety net but this Coalition Government has made it a project to demonise and stigmatise those on income support.
“The Government needs to get on board with the community, economists and the social services sector and commit to raising the rate of Newstart as a priority.
“The Nationals are a party of Government and they need to be developing policy solutions for all Australians, not hand-picking those they deem “deserving”.
