Greens urge Government action over Rottnest drilling threat

The Australian Greens are urging the Federal Government and Resources Minister Martin Ferguson to grant Nexus Energy an exemption from oil exploration licence requirements which could lead to exploratory drilling off the Perth and Rottnest Island coast.

Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens Marine Spokesperson, said today that the sight of an oil rig just 10km from the Perth coast would fill residents with dread.

"It defies logic that we're even having this discussion. It's a no-brainer," Senator Siewert said today.

"Perth, Rottnest Island and WA are famous for amazing beaches, beautiful water, sports and recreation, fishing and sailing. This area should not be put at risk. Surely there are some areas that are just to important to endanger in this way?

"Margaret River and the Kimberley are already under threat, be it from development or drilling, and we’re still waiting for answers from the Montara Inquiry and for improvements to oil and gas regulation.

"This is Minister Ferguson's chance to demonstrate that he does not support ‘exploitation at any cost’. The threat to our beaches and marine environment from drilling rigs off the coast of Perth is unacceptable.

"By granting an exemption in this case, we would be avoiding unnecessary and unwanted drilling, and with it the inherent risks to our coast, marine environment and important existing industries," Senator Siewert concluded.
