It is a foolish time to cut funding to agricultural research, Australian Greens Agriculture spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
"It is foolish to cut funding for agricultural research when the industry is facing arguably its biggest challenge - adapting to climate change," Senator Siewert said.
"Now is the time we should be doubling our efforts to help rural communities and boosting our research capability."
"The problem is particularly stark in the Murray Darling Basin where we have to massively transform our land use practices to cope with a future in which significantly less water will be available. Australian farmers need significant investment in agricultural research and development and to expand flexible and seasonally adaptive farming systems."
"We simply don't have enough of the kind of profitable, productive low water use farming systems we require to meet the needs of basin landscapes and communities in a hotter drier and more uncertain future," Senator Siewert said.
