The Australian Greens have today rejected calls to increase Newstart for only those over 55 saying that it is the Government's responsibility to look after all Australians.
“People in this country should not be living in poverty, and if you are living on Newstart that is what you are doing”, Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services Senator Rachel Siewert said.
“All people on Newstart are suffering and all need to be helped.
“Younger Australians have inherited difficult economic conditions and a climate crisis that was created by the policy decisions of successive Governments and which this Government is doing nothing to alleviate.
“Both younger and older Australians face barriers to work.
“We urgently need to reform our employment services system so that people are supported into work or training no matter their age or experience.
“This is not about age but a Government who is ignoring its responsibilities to unemployed workers, prioritising tax cuts to the most wealthy rather than investing in those in the community that need it most.
“The Grattan Institute report released today has clearly shown that Government policy has created an economic divide between generations and only applying an increase to Newstart to those over 55 will exacerbate this.”
