Greens say Government position on Newstart is untenable

The Australian Greens have today slammed the Government’s position on Newstart as untenable and out of step with community expectations.

"Let’s be clear, it’s the Government who is choosing to keep people in poverty", Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services Senator Rachel Siewert said.

"Their refusal to increase Newstart flies in the face of evidence of what we need for healthy and thriving people and communities.

"It’s beyond reason that people in our community are living in such poverty because of the abysmal rate of Newstart.
"The rate of Newstart has not been increased in over 25 years.

"The Government’s continued failure to act has meant that those trying to survive on Newstart are falling even further behind, prompting ACOSS to call for a higher increase in Newstart. This is desperately needed.

"People in our community should not spend their days worrying about if they can eat.
"It’s just plain cruelty to ignore the experiences we have heard through the Newstart inquiry.
"Government needs to act to increase Newstart immediately."
