Greens: Constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament before we vote on becoming a republic

The Australian Greens support First Nations peoples and their calls for a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament before Australians are asked to vote in a plebiscite on whether to become a republic.

“We can’t move to become a republic before we have justice for First Nations peoples, that includes enshrining the Voice before we vote on a republic. We have unfinished business in this country that must be addressed.

“For how long will politicians ignore First Nations peoples and their right to self-determination? Australian Greens spokesperson on First Nations issues Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

“The Uluru Statement from the Heart and the Referendum Council’s recommendation were the result of a huge amount of work, commitment and consensus building.

“What we have clearly heard is that First Nations peoples want a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament.

“The vast majority of Australians want to see progress and a positive way forward for First Nations peoples.

“The Australian Greens will not support a plebiscite on a republic until we have first addressed justice for our First Nations peoples.
