The Greens are totally “puzzled” that Mr Morrison is pursing drug testing measures despite overwhelming evidence to two senate inquiries by drug and alcohol experts that the measure would not meet any desired objectives and could have adverse impacts.
“The drug testing legislation was sent to committee twice during the last Parliament and the evidence from experts was clear, this approach does not work, that drug addiction is a health issue and should be treated as such”, Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services Senator Rachel Siewert said.
“Experts are currently re-emphasising their opposition to drug testing. Does he not get the message? Health and addiction experts have overwhelmingly rejected this proposal.
“It has already been rejected by the Senate, and for good reason. It will do more harm than good and will be a costly waste of money and time.
“Drug testing income support recipients has been a failed measure in the US and has been abandoned after proposals in the UK and Canada.
“Rather than reinforcing perceptions that people struggling with drug addiction should be vilified and treated with suspicion and contempt, they should be supported through the health system.
“We urge the opposition and crossbench to oppose this harmful waste of time."
