The Australian Greens have welcomed reports that no companies have taken up an exploration lease located off WA’s Margaret River region.
Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens Senator for WA is pleased that there were no takers for the lease.
“This release has been fiercely opposed, and rightly so. Local residents and environment groups have fought hard, recognising the importance of this region and the dangers posed by potential drilling operations,” Senator Siewert said today.
“The oil industry didn’t ask for this area to be released for exploration. Of the 31 sites nominated the relevant round of acreage releases, the Southwest acreage was the only one not triggered by an industry request.
“It was Geoscience Australia’s suggestion to open the area for exploration and it is now clear that the industry isn’t interested.
“Given the unique value of this area and the dangers of deep water drilling, the Government should withdraw this area for release for oil and gas exploration and keep it off the list for good.
“Our South West marine region includes some of the greatest marine diversity on the planet and provides a habitat for many rare and endangered species. It provides a home to more unique marine life than the Great Barrier Reef and deserves better protection,” concluded Senator Siewert.
