The Greens said today that Bupa’s failures in its aged care facilities is a warning about what can happen when large multinational businesses take on provision of a large proportion of social services.
“We now have a large percentage of our aged care services in this country at risk.
“This is a failure of the system of oversight and the Government have failed to properly regulate providers and is yet another multinational company getting away with behaving badly in Australia.
“Bupa received almost $460 million in government subsidies for its aged care facilities last year. Why were they not being held properly accountable?
“It’s a Government failure that after the record of poor care in the UK that the Government has allowed this crisis to unfold.
“It is obvious that there is urgent need for more reform to ensure that older Australians are confident they can access the care they need.
“The Royal Commission cannot be used as an excuse for lack of action and ensuring that older Australians get proper care right now.”
