Government must ensure Jobseeker remains above the poverty line

"I am disappointed that the Government has continued to deny reports of plans to permanently increase the rate of Jobseeker come September" Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services said today.

"There are over 1.6 million people currently receiving Jobseeker. It cannot be Government policy for them to live below the poverty line on a payment of $40 a day. It needs to reassure people that this won't happen."

"It will mean that people will lose the roof over their heads, will force them to go hungry and have so many knock on effects on services and our economy."

"There is clear evidence that the abysmal pre-COVID rate of Jobseeker that put people below the poverty line was a key barrier to employment."

"The latest report by the Grattan Institute has found that the federal and state governments will need to spend a further $70 billion in stimulus over the next two years for the economy to avoid a deep recession. This includes ensuring that the rate of Jobseeker does not go back to $40 a day."
