Government must act to stop whale slaughter

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 16 Feb 2013

The Federal Government must tell the Japanese whaling fleet to immediately leave our waters, the Australian Greens said this morning.

"Australians will be outraged at news that a whale has been taken in Australian waters," said Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson.

"Minister Burke must order these ships out of our waters and send a vessel to ensure this happens and monitor the rest of the whaling season.

"The Australian Government should also seek an injunction in the International Court of Justice to stop the hunt. If they had acted earlier, this situation may never have happened.

"They must also order the Korean flagged vessel, believed to be taking fuel to the whaling fleet, to turn around and leave our waters.

"It has been reported that the South Korean vessel has crossed into our waters carrying fuel. This is illegal, and the vessel must be told to leave our waters.

"The Government must act now to stop whales being slaughtered in Australian waters," Senator Siewert concluded.
