Government must act immediately to end whaling incursions

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 17 Feb 2013

The Federal Government must act immediately and order the Korean flagged vessel Sun Laurel out of Australian waters, the Australian Greens said this morning.

"This vessel is reported to be refueling the Japanese whaling fleet in Australian waters. This is an illegal operation, it contravenes the MARPOL Convention. The Government must act decisively to stop the operations of these vessels in our waters," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today.

"By refusing to take more meaningful action, the Australian Government continues to be a toothless tiger in the face of ongoing whaling operations and violations of our laws and territorial waters.

"The Sun Laurel is supporting the whaling fleet, which is blatantly contraveing international and Australian laws

"This Korean flagged vessel is enabling the whaling fleet to continue its barbaric hunt. Ending the operations of support vessels is an integral part of any efforts to end or reduce the capacity of the whaling fleet.

"The Australian Government cannot sit back and claim that their slow paced legal action against the Japanese is a satisfactory response to this threat. This should seek an injunction immediately to end this seasons hunt and immediately order these vessels out of our waters.

"The Government must show more strength and conviction to stand up to the whalers in the face of this ongoing threat," concluded Senator Siewert.
