Environment Minister fails to protect Australia's sharks

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 5 Mar 2014

The Australian Greens said today that the Environment Minister had failed in his responsibilities to protect sharks when he exempted WA's current shark drum line program and that this failure continues while he refuses to review breaches of the shark cull conditions.

"It is not good enough that he only plans to assessment the next phase of the shark cull," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today.

"By announcing a full environmental assessment of the WA shark cull will go ahead if the WA Government wants to continue with this barbaric policy after the 30th of April, the Minister is making it clear that there are environmental issues involved that need examination, and that granting the initial exemption to the EPBC Act was a mistake.

"Colin Barnett and Tony Abbott have simply ignored the science and opted for a knee-jerk policy response that has subsequently backfired.

"The WA Government has failed to deliver on its commitments to minimise the impact of this cull, and undersized and protect sharks have been caught and killed.

"The Environment Minister needs to immediately review the exemption granted to WA and undertake a full environmental assessment of the cull. It cannot wait another two months," Senator Siewert concluded.
