Disability a key election issue

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 20 Nov 2007

The Australian Greens today reiterated their support for the National CSTDA Community Alliance campaign.

Today, across Australia people with a disability, their families and supporters will be calling for a fair go for people with a disability and their families!

"People with a disability and their families continue to go without basic support and services," said Senator Siewert.

"There is an urgent need to commit more resources to tackle growing unmet need in disability support services."

"Significant changes are needed to the Agreement. Whole-of-life planning, specialised assessment teams, indexation, portability and advocacy need to be prioritised as key areas. Most importantly, we can see the need for more money in this sector. These were all identified by the Senate committee inquiry into the CSTDA and we strongly support the recommendations of the committee," said Senator Siewert today.

"There is still a huge amount of work left to be done in this area, and groups such as the National CSTDA Community Alliance are showing us there are large gaps in the system."

"The Greens have been actively campaigning for disability rights for years and welcome the focus on disabilities as an election issue," she concluded.
