The Australian Greens were deeply saddened at the passing of Professor Peter Cullen, and their thoughts were with his family.
Peter Cullen was a leader in water resource management for more than three decades and was named Environmentalist of the Year in 2001. He was a prominent member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, which was instrumental in pushing the former Howard government to act on water management.
"The Greens would like to express our condolences to his family for their loss," said Senator Rachel Siewert.
"Peter Cullen was a giant in terms of his contribution to natural resource management and water management in Australia," she told reporters in Canberra today.
"Peter made a huge contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the complex issues surrounding the environment, natural resource policy, freshwater ecology and the management of Australia's water resources."
"I was so looking forward to his contribution to the ongoing debate on the Murray River system, and his presence in this vital area will be greatly missed. Australia has certainly lost a great man," she concluded.
