The Government's planned Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme has collapsed in the Senate, hopefully prompting many to look past the politics and identify the reality of what needs to occur.
The science is absolutely clear - if we are to have any reasonable hope of preventing runaway climate change and the chaos that will bring, we need to bring global emissions down rapidly and begin removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
The CPRS would lock in failure. It would see $16 billion handed to big polluters, negating any individual action being undertaken by Australians who are eager to green up their homes, businesses and lives. The 5% target is a slap in the face to all those who want action on climate change, going nowhere near what is scientifically necessary to prevent climate catastrophe.
In many ways, it seems that the CPRS was designed to fail from the outset - with a Government refusing to negotiate with any other parties in the Parliament. In direct contrast, the Greens' proposal would see Australia transformed into a carbon neutral powerhouse.
Western Australia is perfectly placed to take full advantage of renewable technologies, with abundant solar, wind, geothermal and wave resources at our disposal.
The Greens have written to the Prime Minister saying we are willing to negotiate in order to develop a truly effective solution that won't cost us the Earth.
