The Australian Greens have welcomed ongoing support from around the country for a $50 increase to Newstart Allowance, voiced today in an open letter signed by more than forty leaders from the charity, union and community welfare sectors.
"Today's letter shows the diversity and strength of the campaign to deliver a much needed increase to the Newstart Allowance," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
"The Greens have legislation in Parliament to deliver this $50 per week increase to Newstart, backed up with the independent costings to pay for it by fixing the mining tax.
"It is time the Government and Opposition acknowledged that people are living in poverty when they are on Newstart.
"Only two days ago we saw through Anglicare's Rental Affordability Snapshot that just 21 of the 56,000 properties included in the assessment were affordable and appropriate for people struggling on Newstart. Each day that passes we get a clearer and clearer picture of Newstart's inadequacy and yet the Government remains stagnant.
"Neither the Government nor Opposition have shown the leadership on this issue that Australia needs. Only the Greens have costed legislation before Parliament and are prepared to stand up to Australia's wealthiest companies in order to help people who are struggling so far below the poverty line," Senator Siewert concluded.
