The Cashless Debit Card is a punitive approach not backed by evidence and has already caused harm to communities

The Greens welcome the member for Bass Bridget Archer's comments on the Cashless Debit Card and urge the senate crossbench to vote against the card in the Senate.

“The desperate pursuit of the Cashless Debit Card by this Government is rooted in ideology, not evidence”, Senator Rachel Siewert said.

I’ve been to the trial sites and am regularly in contact with people on the card, and it most certainly is causing very high levels of anxiety.

The Government does not have the evidence to make this card permanent and now their backbenchers are speaking up about it.

Income management did not work during the Intervention, the Final Evaluation clearly showed that and yet here we are over a decade later with the Government still pursuing a punitive and racist scheme that is damaging communities.

This is not legislation that can be made better, it should be rejected.
