Burrup Plant Must be Fixed: Greens

"The Woodside Pluto development should be moved immediately to the NW Joint Venture site. What more evidence is needed?" said Senator Rachel Siewert.

Senator Siewert has welcomed the scathing report by Jo McDonald Cultural Heritage Management into the risks to Burrup Peninsula heritage values from continued industrial development.

"This report confirms what we have been saying all along. This report may be seen as a turning point in the campaign to save the Burrup from heavy industry. It is clear that the Pluto project should not go ahead on the current site," said Senator Siewert.

"I wrote last year asking the NW Joint Ventures to consider co-location of the Pluto proposal. I have received encouraging responses from all Joint Venture partners from that letter proposing co-location of Pluto with the existing gas plant," Senator Siewert said. "The next step is to make it happen, starting with a face to face meeting. Unfortunately the Federal Minister Mr Turnbull has refused to facilitate such a meeting."

"As the Minister won't, I am writing again today to each of the North West Shelf Joint Venture partners offering to convene such a meeting to arrange for Woodside to relocate its proposed Pluto Project to existing industrial land on the Burrup Peninsula."

"The Federal Environment Minister is promising to National Heritage List the Burrup. The only piece of the puzzle left is to get Woodside's Pluto Project onto existing industrial land, and away from high value heritage areas," said Senator Siewert.
