The Australian Greens today highlighted the need for income support for the unemployed to be raised in the May budget.
"Those people currently on the Newstart allowance struggle to get by on the existing rate. People have mortgages and rent to pay, food to buy and families to provide for," said Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert.
"The Newstart allowance desperately needs raising in order to help these people. The Australian public already acknowledge that the current aged pension rate is too low, and yet the Newstart allowance remains at an even lower rate than the aged pension."
"Information released today by ACOSS also indicate that single parents are finding it extremely difficult to survive on the level of income support they receive"
"The Government must increase income support for the unemployed and single parents. It is inconceivable that these people are left to struggle and sink into poverty."
"Those on Newstart missed out on the economic stimulus package and now need support more than ever in the face of a recession. We must keep those people most in need from sinking into the poverty trap," she concluded.
