The Australian Greens said today the upcoming budget must deliver for those most disadvantaged in our community.
"As the impacts of the global financial crisis are increasingly impacting on the Australian economy, we need to be focusing our efforts on those individuals and families who are bearing the brunt of the economic downturn and those most at risk of unemployment and financial crisis," said Australian Greens spokesperson on Community Affairs Senator Rachel Siewert.
"The Government are running the line they are ‘robbing the rich to pay the poor' but in reality their approach is very selective, with some people most in need missing out entirely."
"All pensioners and those on other income support payments deserve an increase to help them survive in economic hard times. There is not ‘deserving' and undeserving poor' - all people on income support are struggling to get by," said Senator Siewert.
"Unfortunately it is looking increasingly likely that the Government won't increase the pension for single parents or for those on Newstart. This is condemning these people to poverty and is totally unacceptable."
"The Greens will be assessing this budget carefully to ensure it does deliver a social dividend, and provide real help for people already struggling," she concluded.
