Barnett attempts to extend brutal shark cull

Media Release

The Australian Greens said today that WA Premier Colin Barnett was blatantly ignoring the people of WA by asking the Federal Government to approve a three year extension of his flawed shark cull policy.

"It is appalling that Premier Barnett would seek to extend WA's shark cull, despite its deep unpopularity and the environmental harm it is causing," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today.

"Extending this cull will see even more marine life killed and injured. The Premier has ignored the science and the evidence when it comes to this cull. This cull won't improve safety. It is cruel and destructive.

"People have been sickened by the sight of sharks being killed and wounded on hooks off some of our most popular beaches. This cull has drawn international condemnation. Premier Barnett is putting WA on the map for all the wrong reasons.

"Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has an obligation to protect vulnerable species and our marine environment. The Abbott Government has rubber stamped the WA shark cull once, they must not do so again.

"The Greens will closely examine this application and we will push ahead with legislation to end this policy and prevent federal environmental protection laws from being used to green light a barbaric cull," Senator Siewert concluded.
