Australian Greens welcome Triple j holding firm on moving Hottest 100 countdown

Media Release
Rachel Siewert 7 Dec 2018

The Australian Greens have welcomed Triple j holding firm on their commitment to move their Hottest 100 countdown from January 26.

“More and more people in our community, as well as organisations and institutions around the country are joining the movement for justice, Australian Greens spokesperson on First Nations issues Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

“The Hottest 100 has been linked closely to Australian Day for many years and the community are realising that it doesn’t have to be.  We can still celebrate our wonderful Australian music on a day that isn’t painful for First Nations peoples.

“Triple j have done substantial polling and spoken comprehensively to the community about when they want to celebrate the 100 best songs of the year.

"I welcome triple j’s subsequent decision to change the date and then hold firm, despite the pressure coming from the Government.

“It is fantastic news that everyone in Australia can now enjoy the countdown on a date that doesn’t cause harm and hurt to our First Nations peoples and that people are more and more aware of the truth of our history.

“Alongside millions of other Australians I will be tuning in and can’t wait to see who will be number one this year.”
