Another report, this time by Deloitte Access Economics has demonstrated the benefits of increasing the rate of Newstart by $75 a week.
“Here we have, yet another report presenting hard evidence that raising Newstart would not only help people living in poverty, it would also be good for our economy, Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
“Prime Minister Morrison and his new front bench are very fond of telling us all about how good they are at economic management.
“The Government should raise Newstart to help people out of poverty, to help them put food on the table while they look for work and they should do it for the economy. Deloitte Economics has found that it would boost consumer spending, create more than 10,000 jobs and lift wages.
“This is a reform that would help some of the most disadvantaged members of our community, those who struggle with even the basics like being able to afford food.
“Just last week the Greens introduced a bill to raise the rate of Newstart and Youth Allowance by $75 a week. The Parliament now has the chance to make a concrete difference to people’s lives and ensure that people in our community aren’t living in poverty while they look for work.”
