The Australian Greens have today emphasised the need to ensure airline passengers with a disability are not disadvantaged by budget airline policies which limit the number of passengers requiring wheelchair assistance on flights.
“I support comments made today by the Disability Discrimination Commissioner that we cannot take a ‘first and second class citizen’ approach to offering services,” Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on disabilities said today.
“We need to make sure legislation is amended to prevent instances such as this occurring again, but I don’t think that this needs to wait until after an appeal on the current case.
“I am concerned that such a policy exists on a number of low cost carriers in Australia.
“Australians living with disabilities often face financial pressures and are left with no alternative other than to fly with low cost carriers.
“It is not acceptable for their options to be further restricted by policies of convenience for operators,” Senator Siewert concluded.
