Agricultural planning essential for food security – Greens

The Australian Greens have welcomed today’s launch of the Blueprint for Australian Agriculture, highlighting the need for a clear vision for the country’s agricultural future.

Agriculture spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert said today that planning for the future would help the sector cope with the inevitable challenges to the country’s food security and ensure agriculture is sustainable into the future.

“We are already seeing the agriculture sector deal with the increased competition for land and water supplies. This competition will no doubt increase and needs to be addressed.

“Climate change is already impacting on agriculture; we need a strategic approach to mitigate its impact through planning, research and infrastructure.

“Food security looms as one of the most vital issues we will face this century and so developing a clear vision for the future of agriculture in this country is an important step to take.

“I strongly encourage people involved throughout the industry to participate in the formation of the blueprint,” Senator Siewert concluded.
