The Greens say that the Government's failure to deliver certainty to people on income support is cruel and unfair and undermines confidence in the economy.
"The Government should abandon its plans to cut the Jobseeker supplement by $300 at the end of September and increase Jobseeker permanently", Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services Senator Rachel Siewert said.
Keeping Jobseeker above the poverty line will save people's lives and their livelihoods.
People in our community are so stressed and anxious about how they are going to pay their rent and their mortgages, I am very worried about what is going to happen in September when Jobseeker is cut by $300 a fortnight and we have no idea what is planned for December.
It should not be Government policy for those without work to live in poverty. The higher level of Jobseeker has enabled many people to get out of poverty or stay above the poverty line, which not only significantly impacts wellbeing but addresses a key barrier to finding and maintaining employment.
The Government could make a significant investment in the mental health of the 1.6 million people on Jobseeker by giving them certainty that it won’t be below the poverty line in December.
There is a clear link between mental ill health and financial stress. Why is the Government contributing to stress and anxiety in our community?
